Porcelain veneers are thin layers of porcelain that are attached to the front surfaces of teeth to help improve their shape or color. They can also be used to straighten mildly crooked teeth or close gaps between the teeth.

What can be accomplished with porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a fast, long-lasting solution for correcting many unwanted conditions, including gaps between the teeth, misshapen or chipped teeth, discoloration, mildly crooked teeth and teeth that have pitted or rough surfaces. With proper care, they can last a lifetime.

Some cosmetic dentists call veneers “instant orthodontics” because they can be used to straighten your teeth in just two visits rather than one to three years with traditional orthodontic treatments.

Designing your smile

In your initial consultation, digital photographs of your smile will be taken. The doctor uses these in imaging software to help him plan your new smile.

Impressions of your teeth are taken and a wax-up model is created that shows how your teeth will look with the new veneers. Together with the doctor, you will choose the shade of the porcelain for the veneers.

Preparing your teeth and fine-tuning the design

Your veneers will be placed over the course of two visits. In the first visit, your teeth are prepared and temporaries are placed. The temporaries are used to fine-tune the design to make sure your veneers are to your satisfaction and the bite and function are correct. You wear these temporaries for a week or two while the final veneers are being made.

Placing your final veneers

Your final veneers will then be placed and the doctor will make sure you are happy with them. He will make any adjustments as needed, then you’ll be all set with your brand new, beautiful smile!

Dental Bonding

Although veneers are known to be more durable and stain-resistant, dental bonding is a great way to quickly handle imperfections such as gaps, misshapen teeth, chips and discoloration. In this treatment, a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened by a special light to “bond” it to the tooth. The material is shaped and polished so that it enhances your teeth and looks natural.
